“Are you all right, milady?” Lacos’ concerned rumble met her ears, and she realized

he was talking aloud rather than through a mind-link.

“That was a disgusting, unpleasant experience, but I’ll survive.” Still holding on to

the dragon’s pommel, she pushed herself to a sitting position and shook off the

weakness that had gripped her from throwing up. The sun seemed so bright she

blinked, squeezed her eyes shut, then blinked again. “Just give me a moment.”

When Kalina became used to the light, she noticed the warmth of the sun on her

back and shoulders. A breeze pebbled her nipples and caused goose bumps to prickle

her skin. She rose up to see Lacos floating serenely on the water, a good hundred feet

from the shore. He was munching on seaweed as he waited for her to recover. Above

the surface of the water he looked more an iridescent blue than shimmering green.

She inhaled sweet, sweet air. There was still some water left in her system that she

coughed up after every breath, but she did not care. In moments she would be back on

land, where she should rightfully be.

Kalina leaned forward and rubbed behind Lacos’ small ears and he gave a deep

dragon rumble. A satisfied sigh eased from his mouth as he was obviously pleased at

how she stroked him. Kalina straightened and brought both hands to the pommel. “Can

you go back to Atlantis to help the king face the octopus? As fast as you can fly through

the water, can you reach the city before he does to help protect him? Then bring him

here when the octopus is defeated.”

“There is much I can do that the king is not aware of.” The dragon gave what

sounded like a proud snort. “He and his entourage cannot travel as swiftly as I.”

Kalina smiled and patted his rough hide. “Will you take me to the shore?”

Lacos nodded his great head, splashing water over Kalina. “Yes I will. I can fly in

the air as well as in the water.”

While Lacos headed toward the shore, Kalina realized she no longer feared the sea.

After everything she had been through since leaving land, it was no wonder. But she

certainly would be glad to feel dry soil beneath her feet or paws.

With another deep breath of air, she took stock of her surroundings. Her heart

started pounding in her throat as she realized where she was. She had been too busy

puking up water to take a good hard look.

A sheer cliff rose up to her left, black rock as hard as ore. Before her was the shore—

not the white sand of the beach near Lord Kir’s realm, but dirt and rocks, and dark,

dark sand. Not a soul was in sight.

Kalina shivered. Lacos had indeed brought her to the Kingdom of Malachad.

When Lacos reached the shore, she patted his neck, careful to not dislodge any of

the sea sponges. “Thank you, Lacos. You have done me a great service—and an even

greater service to King Eral.”

The dragon sighed as she slid off his side to touch the shore in the knee-deep water.
